This piece depicts the common thread that connects all life— DNA. Gene editing technology known as CRISPR/Cas9 has been rapidly developing, with UC Berkeley’s own faculty at the forefront. This technology, dubbed “molecular scissors” has incredibly powerful implications for the future. I was interested in the fact that while we now literally have the power to alter DNA, the seemingly permanent stuff that codes who we are, our upbringing and preconceived notions are so much harder to change. Human beings are over 99% identical genetically. Yet the smallest differences in race and culture seem to be sufficient in dividing us. I wanted this piece to be a reminder of the unity of human life and serve as a warning to the fragility of that unity. This work is empowering to me as it serves as a reminder we are far more alike than we are different, particularly in times of conflict.
Purple Sunset
By Juniyaa, Creekside Middle School
"I drew a purple sunset effect with mountains. This was an inspiration from another drawing I drew that is also a sunset but a city instead of mountains. I thought "why not do the same sun but a purple effect instead of yellow and orange?"
Medium: Copic Marker
